The European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry is an organization of individuals whose primary concern is in the area(s) of practice, education and/or research specifically related to the specialty of Paediatric Dentistry. It purpose shall be the advancement of the specialty of Paediatric Dentistry for the benefit of the oral health of children.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
It is only possible for candidates to enter for one prize competition at each EAPD Congress. The submission deadline for the prize entries for the Harrogate Congress will be announced later in 2009. NOTE: Winners of the research papers are required to submit their manuscripts for publication in the official journal of the EAPD the ‘European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry’. EAPD Young Clinician Award (2010) - Revised Regulations

Advance notice is hereby given of the revised regulations for candidates for the EAPD Young Clinician Award for the Congress to be held in Harrogate in 2010. This advance notice is because the requirements call for comprehensive treatment over many months with six-month follow-up examinations to demonstrate a successful outcome of the dental care.

Description: This prize is to encourage excellence in clinical care of children as demonstrated by young clinicians in paediatric dentistry. It will be awarded to a young dentist, active or specialty student members of EAPD, under the age of 35 years on the date of the EAPD Congress, for outstanding clinical care of a child. Candidates may be participating in or have completed a postgraduate education program in Paediatric Dentistry. Candidates may only present one case.

Prize: 1,000 euros/Certificate.

Procedure: EAPD active/student members wishing to participate in the competition must initially submit an abstract for Poster presentation, during the submission period of the EAPD Congress, indicating in addition that they are candidates for the particular Award. Following the submission of the abstract, the candidate should submit the full documentation of the case report to the chairman of the award examination committee 3 months before the date of the EAPD Congress. The form of submission is that of a case report fully documented with text, photographs, radiographs and any other pertinent material such as study casts. In addition each candidate will be required to present a standard size poster at the EAPD Congress and to answer questions in a 3-minute presentation to the prize committee.

A panel of five senior clinicians of the EAPD will be appointed for each Congress and will judge the entries for the Young Clinician Award Competition. They will be appointed by the EAPD Board and will be separate from the other Awards. The Chairman will be the Past-President of the EAPD; one member of the committee will be one of the Partners of the Weymouth Street Paediatric Dental Practice (London), the sponsors of the prize. The other three will be Senior Active members of the EAPD. The Young Clinician Award Committee will meet at the start of the EAPD Congress and will review the case records submitted but will independently score the submissions. The committee will then hear the short oral presentation by each candidate and ask any relevant questions that they might have. The judgement of the committee will be final.

Criteria for case presentation. The report must cover the dental care, over a period of at least 18 months, of a child in the primary and/or mixed dentition. The age of the child cared for should not be more than 12 years of age on completion of the case. The child cared for may or may not, have special needs and/or behavioural problems. The clinical care provided should always include: A preventive care program, comprehensive restoration of primary teeth, including pulp therapy and use of preformed metal crowns and any other treatment as necessary. It may also include interceptive orthodontic treatment where appropriate.
Note: The child may not have been treated under general anaesthesia but other appropriate conscious sedation approaches may be used.

Write-up of the case report. This should include:

  • Background to the case and the reason for treatment,
  • Rationale taken in the behavioural and clinical treatment approach,
  • Examination records, medical history, behavioural history, copies of the appropriate radiographs,
    intra-oral photographs and study casts if appropriate,
  • Clinical photographs of tooth preparations,
  • Details of the behavioural ratings taken throughout the care of the child,
  • Narrative summary on a visit-by-visit basis of the care of the child,
  • Details of the findings at follow-up examination at six monthly intervals (or shorter periods if appropriate), treatment outcome and details of success or failures,
  • Discussion of the case and indications for the future care of the child,
  • References to support and justify the treatment approach taken.

A signed statement is required that the candidate alone performed all of the presented treatment counter-signed by their postgraduate course director (in the case of a postgraduate student), or by the EAPD councillor for the country of the candidate’s resident (in the case of a qualified specialist).

EAPD Young Scientist Award (2 awards)

Description:
This is a competition for the best research presentation in a subject of importance for paediatric dentistry, given by a young scientist under the age of 35 years on the date of the EAPD Congress, who is a member of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry.

Prize: 1,000 and a Certificate.

Procedure:
EAPD members wishing to participate in the competition must submit their abstracts during the submission period of the EAPD Congress, indicating that they are candidates for the particular award. The Scientific Committee will review and evaluate all abstracts submitted for this competition. Only a certain number of these abstracts will be selected for entry into the competition at the Congress. The presenting authors of these selected abstracts will then be informed by the Scientific Committee, as being candidates for the award, and must present their research papers at the EAPD Young Scientist Award Competition at the Congress

EAPD Young Researcher Travel Award (2 awards)

Description:
In the present field of rapidly changing interests and knowledge in paediatric dentistry, the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry organizes this competition for young researcher members of EAPD, under the age of 35 years on the date of the EAPD Congress. It is offered in order to help financially young members to attend, present research and participate in the biennial Congress of EAPD.

Prize: 1,000 and a Certificate.

Procedure:
EAPD members wishing to participate in this competition must submit their abstracts during the submission period of the EAPD Congress. The Scientific Committee will review and evaluate all abstracts submitted for this competition and decide soon after the closing date of the submission the 2 winners of the Award. They will be then informed of the decision and can participate in the Congress without expenses for a maximum amount of 1,000 , covering accommodation and travel.

EAPD Scientific Award for research on ‘Oral health and nutrition’.
(For five consecutive EAPD congresses, 2008-2016)

Description:
Following a proposal from the Dutch Society of Paediatric Dentistry, the EAPD organizes this competition for the best research oral presentation or poster on subjects related to oral health and diet in children. Submissions must be submitted from EAPD members, under the age of 35 on the date of the EAPD Congress.

Prize: 1,000 and a Certificate

EAPD members wishing to participate in the competition must submit their abstracts during the submission period of EAPD Congress indicating that they are candidates for the particular Award. The Scientific Committee will review and evaluate all abstracts submitted for this competition. Only a certain number of these abstracts will be selected for entry into the Competition at the Congress. The presenting authors of these selected abstracts will then be informed by the Scientific Committee, as being candidates for the award, and must present their research papers at the EAPD Scientific Award at the Congress. The winner will be decided by a judging committee appointed by the EAPD Board comprised of two past EAPD Board members – present at the Congress.
